Activists in the port town have warned of a massive agitation to stop the transportation of coal and other cargoes to and from the port if the overloading of the vehicles is not eliminated immediately by the Mormugao Port Authority ( MPA ) and other authorities like RTO and Traffic cell etc.
Speaking to the media, anti-coal activist Xencor Polgi said that they had asked for an inspection by the Goa State pollution control board in the past for the vast pollution caused during cargo transportation along the roads through the city and highway.
“The GSPCB has carried out an inspection and said that the pollution is caused due to the overloading of cargo. The GSPCB has written to the MPA, and the MPA has on 3rd January issued a circular in this regard. MPA, in its brochure, has said that to mitigate the likely dust pollution caused by the transportation of cargo from and to the port, the GSPCB has recommended some measures which are to be followed strictly by all involved in the transportation of cargo,” he said.
The MPA has said that all the vehicles must be adequately covered with tarpaulin, and empty trucks returning to the port must be cleaned at the previous destination. MPA has also said that the heap level of the cargo is to be limited slightly below the top level of the truck carrier, and the transportation must utilise the wheel washing station before leaving the port.
“MPA has even warned that non-compliance of the measures will be viewed strictly and also include debarring of transporter and trucks,” said Polgi
Polgi added that despite the circular, the transporters would carry overload trucks without fear of the law and the port and other authorities
“The traffic police immediately fines people for riding triple seat but closes its eyes when overload trucks move right in front of them. The overloaded trucks cause spillage, which leads to dust pollution, but neither the authorities like the traffic cell, RTO, nor the MPA seems to care,” he said.
