MORMUGAO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Tuesday appealed to women beneficiaries of the Goa Ujwala scheme not to fall prey to what he termed “false and misleading” information being circulated by opposition leaders.
Amonkar said attempts were being made to create unnecessary fear among women by claiming that availing benefits under the Goa Ujwala scheme would affect their existing benefits under the Griha Aadhar and Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSS).
Rejecting the claims, Amonkar urged beneficiaries to verify information before believing rumours being circulated through political circles and social media. He said the Goa Ujwala scheme was introduced to provide additional support to eligible women and families and should not become a subject of political misinformation.
“The opposition should not mislead women or create fear in their minds by spreading false information. Women should understand the facts and not believe rumours,” Amonkar said.
Taking a dig at his political opponents, Amonkar claimed that several opposition leaders were themselves distributing Goa Ujwala scheme forms in their respective constituencies while allegedly creating confusion among beneficiaries about the scheme.
He questioned the rationale behind distributing the forms while simultaneously discouraging women from availing themselves of the benefits.
Amonkar appealed to women to approach concerned government officials directly for clarification in case of any doubts instead of relying on messages or claims circulated through political channels and social media.
He also urged beneficiaries to place their trust in Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and the state government, assuring them that genuine beneficiaries would not be deprived of their existing welfare benefits merely for applying under the new scheme.
Amonkar said political differences should not be allowed to come in the way of welfare initiatives meant for the people and urged women across Goa to remain cautious of misinformation and make decisions based on verified information.
