New Delhi: India batter Abhishek Sharma admitted that his team’s inability to adapt quickly to local conditions played a major role in their defeat to Ireland in the opening T20 International in Belfast.
Ireland created history by defeating the T20 world champions by 34 runs, securing their first ever victory over India across all formats of international cricket. The result also handed the hosts an early advantage in the two match series.
Speaking after the match, Sharma highlighted the importance of rapid adjustment, particularly in short series featuring back to back games where teams have limited time to prepare and train in unfamiliar conditions.
He noted that successful international teams are often those that can understand and respond to conditions quickly, whether during practice sessions or during the course of the game itself. According to Sharma, India attempted to do so but ultimately fell short on the day.
Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker laid the foundation for the win with a crucial half century, guiding his side to an imposing total of 182 for nine from their 20 overs.
In reply, India’s highly rated batting line up struggled to build partnerships and was eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs despite Sharma’s aggressive innings of 50 from only 20 deliveries.
Ireland’s bowlers produced an impressive collective effort, with left arm spinner Matthew Humphreys and Matt Hollard claiming three wickets each to put the visitors under pressure throughout the chase. Debutant Jai Moondra also made an immediate impact by picking up two wickets in his four over spell.
The two teams will meet again in the second and final T20 International on Sunday, with India looking to level the series and avoid an unexpected defeat.
