New Delhi: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted her team needs to improve its fielding standards after several missed opportunities in the field during their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory over Bangladesh.
Despite dropping four catches during the match, India comfortably chased down the target of 137 in 16.5 overs to register another important win in the tournament. While pleased with the overall performance, Harmanpreet acknowledged that the fielding effort fell below the team’s expectations.
The skipper noted that fielding has been a major area of focus in training and described the mistakes as unusual for a side that prides itself on its standards in the field. She expressed confidence that the players would quickly recover and deliver a much sharper display in their next outing.
India’s attention now turns to a high stakes encounter against Australia, a contest Harmanpreet described as one of the biggest challenges of the tournament. She believes a victory against one of the strongest teams in world cricket would provide the squad with a significant boost in confidence heading into the knockout stages.
The captain also reflected on India’s memorable victory over Australia during last year’s ODI World Cup in Navi Mumbai, saying the result had helped the team overcome mental barriers and strengthened belief within the squad.
Opener Shafali Verma starred with the bat and earned the Player of the Match award after a fluent 53 from just 34 deliveries. The aggressive batter said her approach was simple, targeting loose deliveries while rotating strike when boundary opportunities were not available.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana felt her side failed to capitalise on key moments in the game and believed her team finished at least 15 to 20 runs short of a competitive total despite a promising start.
