New Delhi: India’s sprint star Gurindervir Singh is heading into the Asian Games with confidence, backing himself and fellow sprinter Animesh Kujur to finish on the podium in Nagoya.
Gurindervir, who holds the Indian men’s 100m national record, finished second in the 100m final at the Indian Athletics Series Final in Delhi with a time of 10.32 seconds. Despite the intense heat and humidity, he remained surrounded by supporters long after the race, signing autographs and posing for photographs.
The growing attention is a new experience for the 24 year old sprinter. His profile rose sharply in May when he clocked 10.09 seconds at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, becoming the first Indian man to break the 10.10 second barrier in the 100m.
However, his breakthrough was followed by a hamstring injury that disrupted his season. He returned in just 24 days and had limited time to prepare before the Commonwealth Games, where he failed to progress beyond the heats.
Rather than allowing the setback to affect his confidence, Gurindervir used the experience to strengthen his focus. He credited his coach, physiotherapists, dietitians and support team for helping him recover and return to training.
His rivalry with Animesh has also become an important part of India’s sprint hopes. While the two compete fiercely on the track, Gurindervir describes Animesh as a close friend away from competition.
Asked about his medal expectations, Gurindervir gave an emphatic response. He believes both Indian sprinters can reach the podium at the Asian Games.
The challenge will be significant, with leading sprinters from Japan, Malaysia, China and other Asian nations entering the competition. Gurindervir, however, appears ready for the test.
After overcoming injury and rebuilding his form, India’s fastest man now has one clear goal: to stand on the Asian Games podium, preferably alongside Animesh.
