PANAJI: Motorists violating traffic rules in Goa will face stringent action, including hefty fines and suspension of driving licences, with the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) becoming operational across the state from July 1.
The AI-powered surveillance system will monitor traffic round-the-clock through cameras installed at 26 strategic locations, automatically detecting violations and generating e-challans without manual intervention.
Authorities have warned that offences such as red-light jumping, overspeeding, using a mobile phone while driving, carrying passengers in goods vehicles, overloading goods carriages and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs may attract suspension of the driver’s licence for a minimum of three months, in addition to monetary penalties.
The automated system will also detect wrong-side driving, dangerous overtaking, driving without a helmet or seat belt, carrying an extra pillion rider and the use of fancy number plates.
Under the penalty structure, red-light jumping, wrong-side driving, dangerous overtaking and fancy number plate violations will attract a fine of ₹500 for the first offence and ₹1,500 for subsequent offences.
Driving without a seat belt, riding without a helmet and carrying an extra pillion rider will invite a fine of ₹1,000.
Using a mobile phone while driving and dangerous driving will attract a fine of ₹1,000 for the first offence and ₹10,000 for repeat violations, while overspeeding will be penalised with fines of ₹1,000 for light motor vehicles and ₹2,000 for other categories of vehicles.
The ITMS network has been installed at major junctions in Panaji, Verna, Margao, Vasco, Nuvem, Benaulim, Colva, Mapusa, Curchorem and other locations as part of the state’s technology-driven road safety initiative.
Officials have urged motorists to comply with traffic rules, warning that violations will now be detected electronically with minimal scope for evasion.
