Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation continued to improve on Monday, but the death toll from this year’s deluge rose to 105 after one person drowned in floodwaters in Sivasagar district. Despite receding waters, more than 32,000 people remain affected across four districts of the state.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 31,900 people are still impacted in Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar. Nagaon continues to be the worst affected district with nearly 20,000 residents facing the impact of floods, followed by Jorhat with over 5,000 affected and Sivasagar with more than 4,500.
The situation has improved considerably from Sunday, when nearly 52,000 people across five districts were affected. Authorities are currently operating 15 relief camps and distribution centres, providing shelter and assistance to 2,782 people.
Floodwaters continue to inundate 147 villages, while 3,198.77 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure have also suffered extensive damage, and more than 16,300 domestic animals and poultry have been affected.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma released ₹47.93 crore in interim flood assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer to 31,951 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. Each eligible family received ₹15,000, taking the total flood relief disbursed this season to ₹146.26 crore for 96,842 families.
The state government has also launched a comprehensive damage assessment, with 1,144 teachers deployed for surveys. Initial findings have recorded 2,681 fully damaged houses, nearly 18,900 cattle sheds, around 41,000 handloom assets, and crop losses affecting over 99,000 farmers. Based on the final assessment, additional financial assistance is expected to be transferred directly to eligible families by November.
