PANAJI: AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said the decision on electoral alliances in Goa would first rest with the state-level Congress leadership, while making it clear that any proposed tie-up would require approval from the party’s higher authorities.
Kharge said the state leadership would assess and decide on possible alliances based on the electoral situation in Goa. Once a proposal is finalised, it would be forwarded to the Congress high command for consideration and approval.
His remarks come ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, with the Congress looking to strengthen its electoral strategy and bring opposition forces together against the ruling BJP.
Kharge also said the Congress meeting in Goa had witnessed strong participation and unity among party leaders, with leaders assuring him that they would fight together to win the elections.
On representation for Gen Z, Kharge said the Congress would make its best efforts to honour its commitments on representation and election tickets, while also taking other parties into confidence where necessary.
Kharge’s comments on alliances are likely to assume significance as Goa’s opposition parties weigh possible electoral understandings ahead of the Assembly polls.
