MUMBAI:
In yet another twist of the tale, latest reports state that Gautam Gambhir, who has been touted as the prime frontrunner for the head coach role of the Indian Cricket Team, will undoubtedly be appointed for the same by the BCCI very soon.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, high-profile personalities, with connections to the BCCI, have stated that Gambhir’s appointment to the top post is almost inevitable with the BCCI pitching themselves hard to the former Indian batter and WC-winner Gambhir.
It was also noted that a high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, close to the BCCI top brass, told the website that Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach is a ‘done deal’ and it will be announced after the IPL final.
However, Gambhir apparently has remained silent on the matter, even amongst the ranks of his KKR teammates and members, who were reportedly answered to with a shrug of the shoulders and a smile.
Much speculation has been rife since Jay Shah’s announcement of the BCCI inviting fresh applications for the post of head coach as Rahul Dravid’s extended tenure approaches completion.
Primarily, it was learned that Rahul Dravid, whose extended tenure ends after the T20 World Cup, doesn’t want to reapply for the post.
Several reports talked about names including the likes of Stephen Fleming as being considered for the position.
But one that caught the eyes of all was none other than the former Indian batter and WC-winner Gautam Gambhir.
With multiple reports stating the BCCI’s interest in acquiring the services of Gambhir, it has also believed that a factor that has brought together both entities has been the idea of ‘desh ke liye karna hai’, the need to take up the challenge for the nation.
Albeit, the lack of coaching experience at a professional level, Gambhir’s enigmatic personality and mentorship has been proven to be undoubtedly successful, as Kolkata Knight Riders soared to a third IPL title this season in dominant fashion upon the appointment of the former KKR skipper as their mentor.
