New Delhi: In a landmark move to promote renewable energy and combat pollution, the Delhi government has announced a substantial solar subsidy scheme, offering residents up to ₹1.08 lakh in financial support for installing solar panel systems. The announcement was made after a Delhi Cabinet meeting held on May 20, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Under the scheme, citizens installing a 3-kilowatt (kW) rooftop solar system will receive a combined subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh — comprising ₹78,000 from the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY) and an additional ₹30,000 provided by the Delhi government.
“This is a historic moment for Delhi,” said Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. “Until now, people received only the Centre’s assistance. But Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s decision to add ₹30,000 more takes the total benefit to over ₹1 lakh — a first for the capital.”
Financial Support and Easy Payment Options
For those opting for a smaller 1-kW system, the Delhi government will provide a direct subsidy of ₹10,000. To further ease the adoption process, the government has facilitated bank financing, allowing citizens to install solar panels with zero upfront cost. Banks will offer up to ₹90,000 in financial assistance for a 3-kW setup, which can be repaid in monthly EMIs of around ₹4,200.
Broader Anti-Pollution Measures
Alongside the solar push, the Delhi Cabinet approved a comprehensive anti-pollution initiative to prepare for the upcoming winter months. Measures include:
• Deployment of 210 water sprinklers and 70 mechanical road sweepers by the Public Works Department (PWD)
• Installation of 250 additional sprinklers by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)
• Introduction of smog guns, litter collection machines, and automated cleaning technology to reduce manual labor and enhance sanitation
“These steps are part of a broader strategy to reduce dust and particulate matter before smog season begins,” Sirsa said. “We’re acting for today and tomorrow — for Delhi’s future.”
Marking 100 Days of Governance
Celebrating 100 days of the Rekha Gupta-led administration, Sirsa described the progress as “unbelievable.” He credited the Chief Minister’s tireless efforts, stating, “People will be amazed when they see the 100-day report. The development taking place in Delhi is truly historic.”
