Following the building collapsed this morning near Azad Maidan, the Corporation of City Of Panaji has urged the government for special powers to grant building repairs licence to tenants in the jurisdiction.
Madkaikar, reacting to the building collapse said that the heavy rains have been the major reason fro such incidents.
“Today a building near Azad Maidan collapsed. A few days ago, a house near Post office also collapsed and it is mainly due to heavy rains witnessed by the State,” he said.
He said the major issue the CCP faces is that the occupants of old buildings are tenants and the owners do not grant permissions for repairs
“People apply for repair permission but as per law we cannot grant permission to tenants for repairs. Only owners can be given permission,” he said.
He said the. CCP will undertake stability report of all corporation buildings.
“We will see if the private buildings can also be added to it. We urge the government to look into matter seriously as this is dangerous for occupants as well as pedestrians,” he said.
He added, “we urge the government to give us powers to give licences to tenants for repairs”.
Simultaneously, he said, the CCP will take legal advice on the issue.
