PANAJI: Chief Electoral Officer Ramesh Verma was similarly duped by an impostor the day after Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman was the victim of cybercrime.
Umita Bhandari, Verma’s PA, filed a complaint alleging that Verma was impersonated by an unidentified individual using his name and photo (on the WhatsApp DP) and the WhatsApp number +9779826581139.
The complaint further claims that after posing as Verma, the imposter asked those on her contact list for cash favors. The crime happened on April 15 and was reported to the Cyber Crime Cell, which filed a report under the IT Act’s Section 66-C, which deals with identity theft.
The Porvorim Police filed an offense report on Monday in response to a complaint that claimed someone stole Ulman’s phone, used her identity to pose as her, asked her contacts for money, and ordered money to be moved to several bank accounts. Sections 66–C of the IT Act and Section 419 of the IPC (impersonation) apply to this specific case.
