VASCO: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 11 Goa, organised a walkathon and tree plantation drive in Chicolna, Vasco, on Wednesday.
The event was aimed to spread awareness about a clean & pollution-free environment and its benefits on human life. Keeping with the motto “Let us unite and plant trees and clean the Environment”, service personnel, Coast Guard Wives Welfare association ladies, DSC, civilian staff & their families participated enthusiastically and planted more than 250 saplings.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 across the globe and is one of the biggest events organised by the United Nations (UN).
The day is celebrated to focus on the importance of the environment and to remind everyone that the environment should not be taken for granted. A number of activities are planned to be conducted as a part of World Environment Day – 24, which includes a tree plantation drive using Indigenous species, Community clean-up drives, beach clean ship, walkathons and lectures/ debeits on benefits of pollution-free environment.
Deputy Inspector General Manoj Bhatia, TM. The DIG Coast Guard Goa Area, along with Coast Guard Wives Welfare Association (CGWWA) state president Mrs. Deepika Bhatia graced the occasion as chief guest and flagged off the walkathon. The CGWWA president started the tree plantation drive by planting the first sapling. Speaking on the occasion DIG Manoj Bhatia, TM, complemented and thanked all the participants for joining together for a noble cause. He said that events like this would go a long way in spreading awareness about keeping the environment clean and green, which in turn would make our surroundings and the world pollution-free for future generations.
As a part of events planned for the day, Coast Guard personnel along with the local populace also conducted a beach cleanship at Hollant Beach.
