PANAJI: The Education Department’s directive to schools and other institutions to open bank accounts with Axis Bank, according to Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao, is clear evidence of the BJP government’s goal of advancing private banks and eventually closing nationalized banks.
Yuri demanded that CM Pramod Sawant immediately withdraw the circular.
The Leader of the Opposition responded to the Education Department’s circular, which instructed educational institutions and schools to open bank accounts exclusively with Axis Bank, by stating that the purpose of the circular was to support the wife of a BJP leader who was involved with Axis Bank in terms of marketing.
He demanded an explanation from Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on why the government has singled out Axis Bank for special consideration.
“What’s the problem with letting educational institutions and schools have any bank account they want? Should the private banks fail at some point, who will be held accountable? Yuri inquired further, “Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant needs to respond to these crucial questions.
Goa Forward Party (GFP) General Secretary Durgadas Kamat questioned why the government is obsessed with Axis Bank. Is someone from Mumbai or Delhi pressurizing the Goa government to force schools to open their accounts in this private bank instead of the government’s own nationalized banks?
“We condemn the act of the govt. They cannot dictate terms to aided schools/institutions on such matters. We will write to the education department to withdraw this circular,” he added.
