PANAJI: Congress leader Girish Chodankar said the party has finalised its alliance with the Revolutionary Goans (RG) after discussions with several political parties failed to progress.
Chodankar said talks had been held with all parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party and Goa Forward, but the discussions with AAP and Goa Forward eventually stopped. The Congress subsequently moved ahead with RG and sealed the alliance.
According to Chodankar, the alliance is aimed at preventing a division of opposition votes and challenging the BJP in the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
He said the possibility of Goa Forward joining the alliance has not been completely ruled out. If Goa Forward makes a fresh proposal to move forward, the matter would be considered by the alliance committees of Congress and RG before a decision is taken.
On Fatorda, Chodankar reiterated that Congress would contest the constituency with the intention of winning it. He also claimed that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant did not want former MLA Damodar Naik to win from the seat, while alleging that Sawant is now on better terms with Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai. These were Chodankar’s political claims and were not independently established.
Chodankar expressed confidence that the Congress-RG alliance would increase the combined vote share of the two parties.
Asked about Vijai Sardesai’s visit to Goa Congress president Amit Patkar during the Ganesh festivities, Chodankar declined to comment.
