While the Goa Police has to be commended for detecting the crimes, some within 24 hours, the question also arises can this happen without small criminal gangs mushrooming in the State.
These small-time criminals ‘ breeding grounds are a place like Indira Nagar, Chimbel, Moti Dongor, Margao, and Zuarinagar Sancoale.
What’s more? These criminals have close contact with local politicians.
Many of the State’s current politicians use these goons to campaign and get their other illegal works done.
It is revealed that those who figure in the ‘goons list’ prepared by the district police have close links with local politicians.

The Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant, has replied that no criminal gangs operate in the State in the recently concluded Assembly session.
CM’s reply seems to be surprising considering the recent spate of incidents in the State, be it the Swapnil Walke murder case, Anwar Sheikh assault, Narayan Naik assault case, Benaulim rape etc.
Goa is witnessing crimes of the same magnitude as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar or Delhi.
While the Goa Police has to be commended for detecting the crimes, some within 24 hours, the question also arises can this happen without small criminal gangs mushrooming in the State.

Sadly, our politicians have supported these goons, who help them garner votes. They have forgotten their duties.
The ideal politician’s role in a state is to create job opportunities, promote economic activity, improve the welfare of its people and maintain the territorial integrity of his country. They should implement the policies which are meant for the general welfare. They should also ensure the safety and security of their citizens with the help of the Police.
But instead, many politicians today in Goa use these goons to threaten their rivals or opponents.
The Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant’s statement is one such example. He refuses to believe the criminals or gangsters exist in Goa. And why not? Instead of looking at the real mafia and criminals, we call taxi owners the “Taxi Mafia”.
We already know the number of rapes, kidnappings, murders and thefts happening in Goa. The major of these crimes is drugs paddling which is rampant in coastal areas. Without a gang operating in the State, there cannot be a drugs trade. The Police and politicians are systematically ignoring this fact. Many of the kidnappings and crimes are the fallout of the drugs trade.
By admitting that no gang is operating, the chief minister has indirectly told the Police to relax as there are not many criminals here. But the chief minister fails to understand that though the detection rate is high, the crime rate also remains relatively high.
Apart from this, a report has been sent to the District Collector to deport 59 people from 2018 for being involved in criminal activities in South Goa.
However, no action has been taken to date at the District Magistrate’s office.
So, in short, there are 59 criminals in South Goa itself awaiting externment. So how could teh Chief MInister just say no criminal gangs are operating?
With the Assembly elections just six months away, it is high time the chief minister puts the Police on high alert and gets rid of such gangsters in the State.
