DABOLIM: Political activity in the Dabolim constituency appears to be gaining momentum, with several present and former panch members and sarpanchas urging Chicalim Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from Dabolim.
The appeal came on Wednesday evening during the launch of the Gomati Mahila Gruha Udyog (GMGU) initiative, started by Yadav on the occasion of his wife and Chicalim Panch member Sunita Yadav’s birthday.
Several elected and former local representatives who attended the programme openly called upon Yadav to enter the electoral fray from Dabolim and assured him of their support. They also expressed confidence that they would work towards ensuring his victory by a significant margin.
The gathering was attended by Anagha Arlekar, wife of Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Rural Development Agency Chairperson Deepali Naik, former South Goa Zilla Panchayat president Anita Thorat, besides present and former panch members, sarpanchas, community representatives and women from across the constituency.
The political support extended to Yadav added a significant dimension to the launch, turning the event into a platform for a visible show of grassroots backing for his possible Assembly candidature.
The GMGU initiative, meanwhile, is focused on women’s empowerment through skill development, self-employment and support for self-help groups. The organisation plans to provide women with practical training and equipment to help them establish sustainable sources of income.
As part of the launch, sewing machines were distributed to various self-help groups to encourage women to take up tailoring and other home-based activities. Machines for agarbatti and soap-making were also distributed to enable beneficiaries to undertake small-scale production.
GMGU also announced plans to provide free driving classes to women from across the Dabolim constituency, along with assistance in obtaining driving licences. The initiative aims to improve women’s mobility while creating opportunities for employment and greater economic independence.
The organisers said GMGU would continue supporting women and self-help groups by providing skills, equipment and opportunities to develop small enterprises across the constituency.
