VASCO: With the New Model Municipal Market in Vasco reduced to a fire-hit site and traders counting their losses, the focus has now shifted to compensation, with the administration beginning a detailed scrutiny of claims from October 30.
The Office of the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mormugao, has announced that a Scrutiny Committee will examine claims submitted by affected shop owners, vendors and other persons seeking compensation and relief following the devastating fire.
The exercise could prove crucial for traders seeking relief, as the committee will verify the nature of each claimant’s business, examine the losses reported and scrutinise documents supporting their claims.
The scrutiny will begin at 10 am on October 30 at the Conference Hall of the Mormugao Municipal Council in Vasco.
In a press note issued on Wednesday, the administration said help desks had been established at the fire-affected site and the Mamlatdar’s Office to facilitate the submission of claims. A committee headed by the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mormugao, has been constituted to oversee the verification process.
BILLS, STOCK RECORDS UNDER SCANNER
Affected persons who have submitted their names have been directed to appear before the committee with supporting documents, including invoices, bills, proof of ownership or occupation, stock and inventory details, and other records substantiating the losses claimed.
The committee will examine the particulars of each claimant and identify discrepancies or deficiencies wherever necessary. A consolidated preliminary scrutiny report will then be prepared for further action.
For traders whose shops and businesses were damaged in the fire, the documentation process will be an important step in establishing the losses for which they are seeking compensation.
However, the administration has not specified the amount of compensation to be provided, the criteria for determining individual payouts or the timeline for disbursing relief in the press note.
RELIEF PROCESS ENTERS CRUCIAL STAGE
The announcement marks the beginning of the formal verification stage after the fire disrupted businesses at one of Vasco’s municipal markets.
The administration has urged all affected persons to cooperate with the committee and carry the necessary records to ensure timely scrutiny and processing of their claims.
For the traders awaiting relief, the immediate challenge will be to substantiate their losses through the documents available to them. The outcome of the scrutiny will determine the next steps in processing their claims.
The administration has said the preliminary report will be prepared after the verification exercise for further necessary action.
