PANAJI: A large-scale fish die-off reported at Campal Lake has alarmed local residents, who are seeking urgent intervention from authorities to identify the cause and prevent further damage to the waterbody.
Several dead fish were seen floating on the lake’s surface, prompting concerns about the ecological condition of one of Panaji’s prominent urban water bodies. Residents said the incident has not only affected the appearance of the lake but has also raised questions about the quality of its water.
Citizens have urged the relevant departments to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the lake and collect water samples for analysis. They believe the findings will help determine whether the fish deaths were triggered by environmental stress, contamination, oxygen depletion, or another underlying factor.
The incident has renewed public concern about the upkeep of water bodies within the city limits. Residents noted that regular monitoring and timely maintenance are essential to maintaining a healthy aquatic environment and preventing similar episodes.
Environmental observers have also called for greater vigilance regarding potential sources of pollution entering lakes and ponds, stressing that even minor ecological imbalances can have serious consequences for aquatic life.
Locals are now awaiting a detailed inquiry by the authorities and have appealed for swift corrective measures to restore the health of the lake and safeguard its ecosystem.
