BICHOLIM: Since Shreya Dhargalkar was arrested by Cuncolim police on Sunday, her troubles appear to have gotten worse. Devi Lairai, Shirgao devotees are now calling for both her immediate arrest and externment.
Devotees marched to the Bicholim police station on Monday and met with Bicholim Public Investigator Rahul Naik. They demanded that Shreya and her accomplice be charged for their remarks about the Devi Lairai devotees and the Dhond community.
Shreya Dhargalkar was detained by the Cuncolim police on Sunday for her social media post that offended the religious sentiments of Mahajans of Shri Shantadurga Kundalikarin.
Together with the Devi Lairai devotees, Mayem MLA Premendra Shet and Bicholim MLA Dr. Chandrakant Shetye went to the police station.
Shreya Dhargalkar was admitted to South Goa District Hospital on Monday, while Namita Fatarpekar was remanded to four days police custody by Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao.
Recall that Cuncolim was tense following a march by the Mahajans of Shri Shantadurga Kunkalikarin, who demanded that Shreya Dhargalkar be arrested for offending religious feelings and falsely accusing them.
After Shreya Dhargalkar released a video claiming that the panchayat and a temple committee had harassed Namita Fatarpeker, the matter escalated into a controversy.
According to the police, Kavendra Dessai of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalikarin Sausthan, Fatorpa, Quepem, filed a complaint alleging that the accused had maliciously and intentionally posted false and disparaging remarks about the committee members on social media, hurting the members’ and Mahajans’ religious sentiments.
The complaint also claimed that Shreya Dhargalkar had used foul language to offend the Hindu community’s religious sentiments and malign the temple committee members. They also made it clear that the false accusations were meant to sow discord and discrimination against various religions, which infuriated the Hindu community.
