New Delhi: YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained by Delhi Police at his Gurugram residence in Sector 56 on Saturday morning ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Jantar Mantar.
Rathee had urged people to join the October 10 demonstration demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged electoral irregularities and concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to reports, around 50 police personnel gathered outside his residence late Friday night. Officers reportedly entered the house at 7:48 am after his mother opened the door and took him into custody.
Rathee Criticises Security Restrictions
On Friday, Rathee criticised extensive security measures in Delhi, including reported Metro station closures, train cancellations and internet restrictions. He questioned the need for such measures if, as some political supporters claimed, the protest was expected to attract a small crowd.
Delhi Police denied permission for the demonstration, citing public safety and law and order concerns.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs also directed states and Union Territories to coordinate with Delhi Police regarding the movement of potential protesters towards the capital.
Rathee’s reported detention came amid heightened security arrangements ahead of the planned demonstration.
