PANAJI: Things seem to not be well within the Congress party after the appointment of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). Digambar Kamat, a front runner for the post, has now taken an aggressive stance. Sources claim that Kamat has expressed his grief to his close colleagues.
According to reports, Congress supporters stormed Kamat’s residence two days ago.
In the last two days, rumours have circulated that Kamat will resign as MLA. He is also rumoured to have contacted BJP leaders. However, people close to Kamat said that this was just a rumour.
Kamat left for Delhi on Tuesday, and the news of his resignation from Congress was further supported by this development. He went to Delhi with his wife.
According to his sources, he went there for a friend’s wedding. Kamat has not commented on the rumours in the last two days. But among those close to him, he expressed concern over the developments in Congress.
Kamat was also not seen at the Raj Bhavan, where Governor P.S. Sreedharan hosted high tea for all the 40 MLAs of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Kamat was appointed the party’s legislative head in 2019 after opposition leader Chandrakant Kavlekar and nine MLAs joined BJP.
Sources in the Congress said the state unit and elected MLAs had agreed on Digambar Kamat’s name as Leader of the party in the assembly, but the high command had not yet given its approval.
The newly constituted Goa Assembly elected BJP MLA Ramesh Tawadkar as Speaker on the first day of the budget session, but the Congress failed to choose its legislature party leader. So, there was no Leader of Opposition on the first day of the assembly session.
