New Delhi: Pomona, a vibrant city in Eastern Los Angeles County, is set to make history as it hosts the highly anticipated cricket tournament during the 2028 Olympics. This momentous occasion marks the sport’s triumphant return to the Olympic stage after an incredible 128 years. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed that the competition will feature six teams each in men’s and women’s categories, all vying for glory at the Fairgrounds in Pomona.
The choice of Pomona as the venue for this prestigious event underscores a significant leap in cricket’s global recognition. The sport, which last appeared in the Olympics at the 1900 Paris Games, is now poised to captivate new audiences with its fast-paced and thrilling T20 format. ICC Chairman Jay Shah has expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the vast potential of this format to expand cricket’s fan base worldwide.
The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is a testament to the sport’s growing influence, particularly following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) 141st Session in Mumbai, where cricket’s participation was officially confirmed. Cricket joins an exciting lineup of new sports at LA28, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash. The T20 format has gained significant traction in multi-sport events like the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, further solidifying its appeal. The men’s and women’s competitions will each feature six teams, promising a high level of competition and global engagement.
