PANAJI: WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar said that the State’s dams have enough water storage capacity to meet the demand for drinking water.
“The recent summer showers have been helpful. He pointed out that all other dams aside from the Panchawadi dam have enough water in them to last until mid-June. Unlike other dams, the Panchawadi dam does not have permanent storage capacity,” said Shirodkar.
He further said that since the dam depends only on rainfall, the department was augmenting its supply with an extra 30 to 40 million litres per day from Sanguem.
In response to a recent incident in which a young person drowned in a water pit, Shirodkar urged people to exercise caution, especially if they are not experienced swimmers.
He emphasized that it is not feasible to have police stations all the way along the 30 to 40 km of WRD canals.
He continued, “We have put up fencing along the canals at several locations.”
Shirodkar stated that the State government had submitted a proposal to PRAWAH regarding the inspection of the Mhadei river basin, but had not received a response as of yet.
The Karnataka government objects to the inspection, saying that it is under investigation. We are awaiting PRAWAH’s ruling on this matter,” he stated.
Building these new bandharas is an essential step in maintaining water security and assisting the State’s agricultural endeavours.
