CANACONA – Stating Cleanliness on Canacona beaches is neither maintained, nor the beach-cleaning workers are given employment protection, GPCC General Secretary and last Assembly polls Canacona Congress candidate Janardhan Bhandari has demanded immediate termination of the Beach Cleaning Contract.
Bhandari, along with others, inspected the Galgibaga beach. On this sea coast, the Forest department has Turtle Conservation Centre, besides Drishti Life Saving Force Tower, and was visibly upset at the sight of massive destruction of sand dunes and plantations in the absence of any measures for protection against nature’s fury.
Bhandari also met the Beach Cleaning workers, who informed they are the same ones working to maintain the beach cleanliness for the past 12-15 years, yet they have been laid off for a month period by their Contractor (Hired agency).
It may be recalled that after a two years gap in the Beach Cleaning Contract with the Dhristhi Marine (accused of poor beach maintenance), it has allotted the contract to Karnataka Commercial and Industrial Pvt Ltd since October 2019.
‘While allotting the contract, the government has informed that KCIPL will maintain Cleanliness at all beaches. The beaches are not-at-all maintained, and to top it all, the beach cleaning workers are laid off. Where is the job safety for these workers who have been doing this menial job for the last 12-15 years. They don’t have families to support. Why the workers are laid off or given breaks? I demand the government give proper justice to these people with no other income source. I also demand the immediate termination of the Beach Cleaning Contract of KCIPL, which failed to maintain the beaches of Canacona and particularly Galgibaga beach, which attracts tons of domestic and international tourists.
