New Delhi: A Delhi court has extended the judicial custody of six accused in connection with the Satya Niketan paying guest building collapse that claimed seven lives.
The Patiala House Court extended their custody by another 14 days after the accused were produced before the court following the completion of their earlier custody period. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the building collapse is still underway.
The five storey property, operated as a boys’ paying guest accommodation under the name Hostel Daze, collapsed at around 1.30 pm on September 6 in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, near Delhi University’s South Campus. Seven people were killed in the incident.
Among those arrested are property owner Urmila, 75, her 81 year old husband Hariram, 81, and their 52 year old son Mahesh Gupta. The PG operators, Sudhanshu and Shubham Tyagi, along with labour contractor Sanoj, are also in custody.
Investigators said Mahesh Gupta was responsible for overseeing maintenance of the property on behalf of his parents. The building had been leased to Sudhanshu and Shubham in August 2025, after which it was converted into a paying guest facility.
Police also arrested Sanoj, who was allegedly supervising repair work in the basement, from Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh. Initial questioning indicated that repair work was being carried out in the basement, where waste had reportedly accumulated during the monsoon over several days.
Authorities are also examining construction and repair work on the ground floor, where a commercial extension was reportedly being undertaken. Investigators are assessing the roles of the property owners, PG operators and individuals involved in the repair and construction activities.
The incident has also prompted action by civic authorities, with several officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended.
Separately, the Delhi High Court is hearing petitions concerning the safety and regulation of paying guest accommodations across the national capital following the tragedy.
