PANAJI: Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira raised concerns over alleged irregularities within the police and government machinery, questioning whether the state can effectively tackle crime without first addressing misconduct within its own system.
Speaking during the Assembly discussion on law and order, Ferreira referred to allegations including bribery, collection of money in connection with government jobs, possession of assets disproportionate to known income and alleged wrongdoing involving jail personnel.
Ferreira called for the allegations to be independently verified and urged the government to act against anyone found to have violated the law or abused their position.
Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant directed the Director General of Police to conduct an inquiry into the allegations raised by Ferreira.
Sawant said appropriate and stringent action would be taken if the inquiry establishes wrongdoing by any police or departmental official, including suspension where necessary.
On the case involving a suspended police constable allegedly connected to a drug-related matter, Sawant said the authorities would examine the case and take further action, including arrest, in accordance with the law.
The Chief Minister maintained that allegations against personnel would be investigated and those found responsible would face action as per the applicable rules and law.
