PERNEM: In a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of theft at large public events, the recent Sunburn festival at Dhargal witnessed a significant number of mobile phone thefts, with a total of 129 mobiles reported missing over the three-day event.
The Sunburn Festival, known for its electrifying electronic dance music (EDM) and vibrant atmosphere, attracted thousands of enthusiasts from across the country. However, amidst the festive fervour, a group of cunning thieves saw an opportunity to strike.
The festival grounds, bustling with attendees immersed in the music and celebrations, provided an ideal setting for these thieves to operate undetected.
Complaints began pouring in as soon as the festival concluded, with many attendees realizing their mobile phones were missing. The sheer number of stolen devices has raised concerns about the security measures in place at such large events.
According to reports from festival-goers and local authorities, 129 mobile phones were reported stolen during the three-day event. This figure is alarming and highlights the organized nature of the thefts.
The victims, many of whom were young festival attendees, expressed frustration and disappointment at the lack of adequate security measures to prevent such incidents.
The police have acknowledged the complaints and have initiated an investigation into the matter. “We take these incidents very seriously and are working diligently to identify and apprehend the perpetrators,” said a police personnel.
To tackle the issue, police sources have revealed that all mobile SIMs and sets reported stolen are now under surveillance for their IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers and location tracking. This approach aims to trace the stolen devices and bring the culprits to justice.
The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the festival grounds and interviewing witnesses to gather more information. Additionally, they are collaborating with mobile service providers to block the stolen phones and prevent any further misuse.
