CANACONA: A huge fire apparently caused by short-circuit on an electricity pole having multiple alignments has almost engulfed the busiest street of Palolem.
Infact, initially the sparks emanating from the pole caught the attention of the motorists, and shopkeepers on the busiest junction of Palolem street at about 8.00 pm. The sparks soon developed releasing fire-balls as big engulfing entire pole with multiple cables into a huge fire.
Shopkeepers on either sides of the street came out, while motorists stopped creating a chaotic situation at the busiest Palolem.
People and onlookers fears the due to the intense fire the live electricity alignment may get snapped and fall down causing a major catastrophe, if live wire falls on street full of vehicles and establishments’ on both sides of the road.
People were heard shouting someone to call Electricity department and switched off the power supply, and while still be sparks with crackling sounds were going on, some electricality personnel reached the spot., and simultaneous power supply was turned off from the nearby transformer throwing the entire Palolem’s main beach area into total darkness.
A social activist Socky Da Silva who witnessed the entire scenario with helplessness said, ‘it’s a miracle that no one got hurt nor any properties are damaged due to the fire inferno, gravely threatening safety of property and life’,
The power was finally restored very late into the Thursday night, informed sources.
