NAGPUR: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the crucial role of citizens who legally challenge government decisions, stating that such actions are vital for enforcing discipline in governance. Speaking at the Late Prakash Deshpande Smriti Kushal Sangathak Puraskar ceremony in Nagpur, Gadkari said court interventions often achieve what ministers and political leaders cannot due to the constraints of popular politics.
“There must be individuals in society who take the government to court. It helps instill discipline among politicians. Often, even ministers are unable to act due to political pressures, but a court order compels action,” Gadkari said, highlighting the judiciary’s role as a corrective force in democratic governance.
The senior BJP leader lauded the recipients of the Kushal Sangathak award, noting their persistent legal efforts against flawed decisions, particularly in the education sector. He credited them with successfully challenging and reversing several adverse government policies through the courts.
Gadkari, known for spearheading infrastructure development across India, made it clear that constructive criticism and legal challenges are not anti-government acts but essential to a healthy democracy. He asserted that such civic activism helps refine policies and reinforces the principle that governance must remain answerable to the people and the law.
The event honored individuals who used legal mechanisms to uphold public interest, underscoring the transformative power of active citizen participation in democratic processes.
