VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday laid the foundation stone for a new nullah at Sai Nagar, aimed at improving the drainage system in the area. The event was attended by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, ward councillors, and local residents.
Speaking to the media, MLA Salkar highlighted the persistent drainage issues faced by residents, especially during monsoons.
“Despite being part of the city, this issue remained unresolved for years. Councillors Amey Chopdekar and Devita Arolkar had been consistently urging me to take action. We have now initiated this Rs 24 lakh project to construct a new nullah, and similar projects will be taken up across Vasco using funds from PWD, WRD, or MPLAD schemes,” said Salkar.
He also addressed the lack of a sewerage system in the area, which has led to sewage flowing directly into Mainolem Lake.
“We will begin work on a sewerage pipeline network within six months, resolving the long-pending sewage and drainage issues. Additionally, sewage pumping stations are under development at Mainolem and Belabai at a cost of Rs 40 crores, with plans for another at Kharewado and Sai Nagar . These projects will enhance sewage connectivity and improve living conditions in Vasco,” he added.
Salkar assured that efforts are being made to prevent sewage discharge into Mainolem Lake, and that Vasco will witness significant improvements in sewage infrastructure within 18 months.
“People have built houses but there is no sewage connections and people are forced to discharge the sewage in gutters or in the lake . With the new sewage pipeline network, all the long pending issues will be resolved. I am grateful to Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and WRD Minister for approving several key projects in Vasco. The constituency will soon see the implementation of both small and large-scale development works,” Salkar concluded.
