India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about his two-year stint with the national team, admitting that his tenure has included both significant successes and failures across Test, ODI and T20 cricket.
Speaking ahead of India’s upcoming home white-ball season against the West Indies, Gambhir said setbacks are an unavoidable part of taking responsibility for the national team and that he accepts both his achievements and failures.
The India-West Indies series begins on September 27 and features three ODIs and five T20Is. Shubman Gill will captain India in the ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer will lead the T20I side.
Gambhir also reflected on his long-standing relationship with former India captain Rohit Sharma. He said their association goes back to their playing days and extends beyond their professional roles as coach and captain.
According to Gambhir, differences in opinions between a coach and captain are natural, but the ultimate objective must remain the team’s interests. He said the same approach has shaped his working relationships with Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.
Gambhir praised all four captains for consistently putting Indian cricket ahead of individual interests. He said their approaches and reading of the game may differ, but their team-first mindset has helped the support staff work effectively.
The India coach also backed Gill after his first major Test captaincy assignment during the five-match series in England. Gambhir praised the young captain for handling the demanding challenge and said he expects Gill to achieve even more in the coming years.
Gambhir’s comments come as India prepares for a busy home season, with the West Indies series providing another opportunity for the team to build momentum across the white-ball formats.
