PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today assured the House that he would instruct Forest Department to take strict action against those poaching wild animals.
The issue was raised by Revolutionary Goans Party MLA Viresh Borkar.
“I assure the House that he would instruct Forest Department to take strict action against those poaching wild animals,” said CM Sawant.
He further said that such cases happen when someone sets a trap for hunting wild boars, but leopards of tigers fall prey to these.
A leopard died after getting stuck in a snare set for a wild boar in the forest of Dabem-Morpilla in Quepem Taluka.
People in rural areas place cable traps to catch wild animals, and animals get stuck in these traps and die.
On Saturday, a trap was laid in the forest to hunt a wild boar that unfortunately killed a leopard.
Minister Rane said he had asked the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to conduct an investigation into the incident and track down those responsible for laying such traps for wild animals.
“We will take strict action against offenders. Such acts will not be tolerated. Protection of wildlife is an important aspect of the forest department, and we are committed to it,” he said.
