Panaji: Congress leaders paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, Father of Nation, on his 76th death anniversary today.
GPCC President Amit Patkar, MP Francisco Sardinha, Senior Vice President M K Sheikh and other leaders were present at Congress house.
Francisco Sardinha, speaking on the occasion, said that Mahatma Gandhi sacrificed his life for the country and worked in the interest of people. “He fought against the British through several movements for independence of India. He wanted India to progress, however Nathuram Godse killed him,” Sardinha said.
He said that the Congress leaders and freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for independence. “But today we are witnessing divide and rule policy to grab power. We need to be vigilant and work selflessly for the progress of the country,” he said.
“We need to work to bring back our government for the welfare of the country,” he said.
Amit Patkar said that the father of the nation was killed by Nathuram Godse. “Mahatma Gandhiji had thoughts to bring Ram Rajya and he had begun his work in that direction. He chose the path of non-violence, but such a visionary leader was killed by RSS member Nathuram Godse,” Patkar said.
“He tried to unite people of the country and showed the way of peace, still he was killed,” Patkar said.
“Nation can’t progress if we have thoughts like Nathuram Ghodse in our heart,” he said.
Patkar said that Rahul Gandhi is uniting people through his Bharat Jodo, Nyay Yatra, however RSS and BJP is obstructing him.
MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira in program organised at Hutatma Chowk-Mapusa said that Mahatma Gandhi along with other leaders of Congress sacrificed their lives for independence of India.
