Panaji: Goa could host its first ever State Games later this year, while plans to establish Sports Schools at multiple locations across the State have also emerged as part of a broader effort to strengthen the sporting ecosystem.
The proposals were discussed during a meeting between a Goa Olympic Association delegation led by President Sadanand Shet Tanavade and Sports Minister Dr Ramesh Tawadkar at the Secretariat in Porvorim.
The proposed State Games are expected to provide Goa’s leading athletes, teams and clubs with a major competitive platform across different sporting disciplines. The event could be structured on the lines of the National Games, although the format and other details are yet to be finalised.
The initiative is aimed at giving top local sporting talent greater exposure while creating a stronger competitive environment within the State.
Another major proposal discussed was the development of three to four Sports Schools at different locations across Goa. The schools could offer a structured system for identifying, training and nurturing young athletes from an early stage.
Tanavade highlighted the potential of Goa’s villages and schools to produce athletes capable of competing at the highest level. Physical education teachers could play a crucial role in identifying promising youngsters and directing them towards suitable sporting disciplines.
The meeting also examined ways to strengthen coaching and athlete support systems. Suggestions included refresher courses for Sports Authority of Goa coaches and better coordination between coaches and sports associations.
The need for a more professional administrative structure and greater use of artificial intelligence and modern technology in sports management was also discussed.
Treasurer Jayesh Naik presented plans for the proposed Olympic Bhavan and Goa Olympic Association office, adding another dimension to the State’s long term sporting development roadmap.
