PANAJI: Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over Karnataka’s plans to divert Mhadei River at Kalasa-Banduri, Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) has demanded Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s resignation for “fooling the people of Goa” over his “false and contradictory statements”.
“Both these national parties did nothing to ensure that the State’s interests on Mhadei were protected as they failed to form a detailed project report (DPR) despite the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal urging for the same,” said RGP Supremo Manoj Parab
He further said both BJP and Congress MLAs from Goa are campaigning for Karnataka elections but it a shame that these BJP MLAs have sold Mhadei to Karnataka for political gains.
St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar said that Goa BJP government has started the election campaign of Karnataka by compromising Mhadei. This government is making the people of Goa suffer by allowing diverting water from Mhadei,” he said.
Borkar also lambasted the BJP government saying it is not giving the opportunity for people to raise their voice. “So far, the government has not clarified whether a daylong discussion will take place in the Assembly session,” he said, stressing the importance of discussion over the issue.
He also said that Congress governments (at centre and state) in the past have also failed to resolve the issue of Mhadei. “Congress is also playing similar politics like BJP to benefit their party in Karnataka,” he said.
According to him, both BJP and Congress are helping their parties in Karnataka to derive political dividends over the Mhadei issue.
The Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT), also referred to as the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal, is a tribunal that adjudicates the dispute over River Mhadei water allocation. The sharing of the waters of this river is a cause of dispute between the governments of Karnataka and Goa
