Goemkarponn desk PANAJI: Governor, PS Sreedharan Pillai planted three varieties of saplings at the Raj Bhavan campus, Donapaula under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ a campaign which was launched by the Prime Minister of India, today. Shri M. R. M Rao, IAS, Secretary to the Governor also participated in the initiative by planting a sapling. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that today, one tree has been planted in the name of my mother, one in the name of my nation’s mother, and one in the name of my late father and underscored that the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, launched by Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, will play an important role in making the environment clean and beautiful. He appealed to the people to extend their support by planting a tree in their mother’s name. Through this, the concept of one earth will go a long way to preserve and show our commitment to preserve our environment, he added. Speaking further, the governor stated that the planet is not for exploitation, rather, we should nurture it by identifying it in many ways, and as part of this, initiatives such as tree planting have begun. The Raj Bhavan contains almost 90 acres of forest /garden areas, which we are constantly enhancing. Let us work together to achieve the objective of nurturing our mother Earth. The government is also highly supportive of these issues, he asserted. The Governor informed that two statues will be installed at Raj Bhavan in the coming days, one of which will be of Sushruta, with a plaque acknowledging him as the Father of Surgery. Sushruta was a surgeon who performed more than 1000 operations around 5000 years ago. A similar monument was placed in the Institute of Surgery in Austria on the initiative of one Madras-based doctor, K.M. Cherian, a heart surgeon and Padma Shri awardee in 1991, with a plaque acknowledging him as the Father of Surgery. The Second statue will be of Acharya Charaka, a founder of Ayurveda. The many images displaying the 1000 heart surgeries done in India 5000 years ago will be shown together with descriptions for information and knowledge of people.
