PANAJI: The Social Work Programme at Goa University’s D. D. Kosambi School of Social Sciences and Behavioural Studies, in collaboration with the Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance, the National Service Scheme (NSS), and the UGC Centre for Study of Social Inclusion, celebrated World Mental Health Day 2024 with a series of activities under the theme “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.” Held on 7th, 10th, and 11th October, the program aimed to raise awareness about mental health as a crucial component of professional success, blending interactive sessions, competitions, and expert talks to encourage mental well-being in the workplace.
Alisha Dias, Program Coordinator, emphasized the purpose of the event, stating, “By observing Mental Health Day at the University, we are fostering a culture of support and recognizing that mental well-being is integral to success in any work environment.” This focus reflected the core principles of social work, advocating for holistic approaches to mental health and well-being.
The program began on 7th October with an interactive session on “Workplace & Mental Health” facilitated by Mr. Vithoba Mhalkar, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Bambolim. The session addressed workplace mental health challenges and strategies for promoting mentally healthy environments.
On 10th October, the focus shifted to nutrition with the “Brain & Gut Health Cook-Off.” Faculty and students participated in preparing healthy tiffins and probiotic beverages, emphasizing the crucial link between nutrition and mental well-being. The day also featured a panel discussion on the “Brain & Gut Connection,” with Dr. Belinda Viegas Mueller, Dr. Jose Filipe Alvares, and Mrs. Varsha S Naik exploring the significant relationship between gut health and mental wellness.
The final event on 11th October, titled “Mental Health Champions,” featured two impactful sessions led by Dr. Sneha Pokle and Dr. Tanvi Pednekar, both Consultant Psychiatrists from Goa’s District Mental Health Program (DMHP). They discussed the role of mental health professionals in workplaces, supported by their teams of psychiatric social workers, nurses, and psychologists.
The event was presided over by Senior. Professor, Dr. Harilal Menon, Vice Chancellor of Goa University, who in his address emphasized, “The thought process of a person is what makes you who you are today. Try to be positive and take challenges as opportunities.” His words encouraged participants to embrace a positive mindset in the face of challenges, reinforcing the theme of the event.
The event concluded with a commitment to continue prioritizing mental health in academic and professional settings, recognizing the importance of holistic well-being for success.
