PANAJI: Rs 100 crore has been sanctioned to Goa University for upgradation as Multi-Disciplinary Education & Research University (MERU) under Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan.
The decision was taken during the Project Approval Board (PAB) meeting of PM-USHA. The amount approved for Goa University under the scheme is Rs 999,920,109.
To transform Goa University into MERU, the erstwhile departments of the University have already been amalgamated into various Schools based on their functional similarities.
To provide a holistic and multidisciplinary teaching learning environment, University is also planning new programmes in technical education at the Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels on campus.
Several Universities across the country have also been allocated the grants by PAB for setting up of MERUs as it is one of the action points of NEP 2020.
Under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, the university had received a grant of `20 crore twice in the last seven years for infrastructure development.
Following these two grants, latest is a major grant the varsity has received from the education ministry based on its academic performance and community engagement.
In a higher education ecosystem, teaching-learning and research have been major activities.
However, in light of the implementation of the national education policy 2020 from the academic year 2022-23, GU is envisioning to become a multidisciplinary higher education institute (HEI) with holistic teaching-learning, research and community engagement.
