PANAJI: University Science and Instrumentation Centre (USIC) under the School of Physical and Applied Sciences (SPAS) Goa University had organized AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy sponsored two weeks Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Imaging Spectroscopy and Machine Learning” under the leadership of, Prof. Harilal B. Menon, Vice Chancellor of Goa University held at Goa University.
The FDP was financially supported by ATAL Academy, New Delhi. A total of 45 participants registered for the programme from the Electronics and Computer science background. They comprised faculties, PhD students and postgraduate students from Goa and other states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Orissa and Delhi.
The inaugural function was held at Goa University in the presence of the Chief guest Prof. Suman Kundu, Director of Bits Pilani, Goa Campus, Prof. Harilal B. Menon, Vice Chancellor of Goa University and Industry expert Dr Pankaj Wasnik, Sony Research India Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru. Prof. Rajendra Gad, Vice Dean, SPAS and the coordinator of this FDP, welcomed the guest and gave a brief introduction to the FDP programme. Prof. Suman Kundu mentioned that Goa is an education hub because its different colleges offer various areas of study and research. Prof. Kaustubh Priolkar, Dean, School of Physical and Applied Sciences, briefed about Goa University and its activities. Principal Research Scientist and Head, Sony Research India Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, Dr Pankaj Wasnik, mentioned the industry-academia role and the opportunities for the students in the industry to pursue the career. Vice-Chancellor of Goa University Prof. Harilal Menon, addressed the gathering and motivated to organize such FDP programmes in the interest of the faculty and student community. The Vote of thanks from Dr Jivan Parab, Head of the Electronics Department at the school of Physical and Applied Sciences at Goa University, concluded the inaugural function.
A total of 14 technical sessions were conducted during the two weeks of FDP. Each Online and Offline week had 7 sessions. In this two-week Faculty Development Programme, various related topics based on Imaging Spectroscopy and Machine learning were discussed by renowned resource persons in these areas. The sessions were conducted by 10 academicians, including industry experts from India and abroad. The programme was based on technical talks and hands-on sessions to employ machine learning techniques on imaging spectroscopy data. The valedictory function was conducted in the presence of Prof. Vishnu Nadkarni, Registrar, Goa University; Deepak Chodankar, Vice President at Smartlink Network and Systems Ltd., Verna Goa, Prof. Jyoti Pawar, Dean, Goa Business school, Goa University, Prof. Rajendra Gad, Vice-Dean of the School of Physical and Applied Science, Dr. Narayan Vetrekar, Program Director for NSQF at Goa University and Ms. Shreya Prabhudesai, Assistant professor at USIC.
