PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that Goa Government is capable of fighting with Karnataka on Mhadei River Water Issue.
“Goa Government is capable of fighting with Karnataka on Mhadei River Water Issue. So the government will definitely win Mhadai’s legal battle,” said Sawant.
He further expressed hope that Maharashtra should also cooperate with Goa government.
“The Goa government’s legal team is working to fight with Karnataka on the Mhadai river issue of Goa . Therefore, it is certain that Goa will definitely win this battle; But Maharashtra is also expected to cooperate on this issue,” he added/
The August 2018 ruling of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) Award has been contested by all three riparian states. In addition, the Goa government has sued Karnataka for contempt for starting construction at the contested site without first obtaining environmental clearances (ECs).
The Goa government filed an SLP on July 10 of this year, challenging the Mhadei Tribunal’s decision to award Karnataka 13.42 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water for its Kalasa-Bhandura drinking water and irrigation project. The SLP was accepted by the Supreme Court.
Goa has also raised objections to the approval granted by the Centre to the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of the Karnataka government for constructing dams at Kalasa and Bhandura to carry out the diversion of water outside the basin.
