PANAJI: The lack of employment opportunities for local youth in private industrial establishments operating in Goa came under sharp focus in the Assembly, with Dr Deviya Rane calling for a stronger policy to ensure qualified Goans get a fair share of jobs.
Rane highlighted the presence of major companies such as P&G, MRF, Nestlé and ACGL in the state, but said local youth have expressed disappointment and helplessness over the lack of permanent and contractual employment opportunities in these establishments.
She pointed to a gap in the existing policy that allows private companies to engage manpower from outside Goa, potentially limiting opportunities for qualified and technically trained local youth.
Rane called for a robust Industrial Policy that would promote and prioritise employment for Goans, including a proposal for 50% employment opportunities for qualified local youth in private companies operating in the state.
Responding to the issue, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said he would personally take up the concerns with ACGL, P&G and Nestlé and seek greater employment opportunities for locals.
Sawant specifically raised concerns over ACGL, stating that the company was not providing permanent jobs to local people. He said he would ask the company to create permanent employment opportunities for Goans.
