CANACONA- GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins made a case of Consumer Protection and Rights as empowerment of consumers.
Martins speaking at the symposium at the Consumer Welfare Cell (CWC) of Shree Mallikarjun and Shri Chetan Manju Desai College in Association with Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (GIPARD) as part of Consumer Empowerment Week on upholding consumer rights on Saturday.
Martin explained with examples the six Rights of the Consumer under the Consumer Protection Act 2019.
He urged the students to use the CPA 2019 to improve road safety and to tackle the grievances of consumers regarding PWD Water Supply, Electricity & LPG cylinder refills, among other issues.
Martin said, “You are entitled to safe roads, roads without potholes, protection from stray dogs and cattles’.
‘one fellow in Nuvem once fell in a pothole, fractured his legs, he filed a case and got compensation. Anyone putting your life at risk can file and obtain compensation.’
Speaking on mobile thefts and adhering to consumer rights and protection, Martins said, ‘While purchasing or obtaining Mobile by way of gift, please ensure proper receipt mentioning costs and IMEI number. By mentioning IMEI number on Mobile lost/theft complaint lodged to police helps to trace the mobile set whenever and wherever it is used.
‘My rights as a consumer are protected because I am using goods and services. We are normally doesn’t exercise our rights to be informed.’
The symposium was successfully held on the topic “Consumer Know Your Rights”. The resource person for the programme was Roland Martins, Coordinator GOACAN. Guest for the programme was Ms Noronha Fernandes (Secretary GOACAN) and Subhash Mahale(Retired Teacher and SRM Reporter).
Also, presented and spoke with College Principal and Professor Dr. Manoj Kamat. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rupa Chari. Utkersh Pagi and Assistant professor Keval Naik coordinated the event.
