DHANDEM: A goods train in Sanvordem mowed down fifteen buffaloes on the railroad track at Dhandem. The incident happened early on Wednesday morning.
The train driver used the emergency brake when he saw the herd of buffaloes squatting on the track, but because the train was moving at 60 kmph, it took some time to stop, and 12 buffaloes were mowed down to death, according to Meraj Ghaffar, the technical section in charge of the Curchorem railway station.
According to Ghaffar, the loaded goods train departed the Curchorem train station on Wednesday at 1:50 a.m. According to him, train movement resumed after the carcasses were removed from the track, which took about three hours.
The goshala at Zambaulim has received the two injured buffaloes. According to Ghaffar, the owner of each buffalo had to pay the railways for the losses because the animals were all marked with tags on their ears. Nevertheless, no one has claimed the buffaloes as of yet.
