Panaji: Congress President Amit Patkar has written a Letter to the Chief Secretary of Goa Puneet Kumar Goel (IAS) to immediately sack the Director of Transport Polumatla P. Abhishek for his insensitive & irresponsible attitude and his complete failure to take measures in controlling Fatal Accidents on Killer Roads of Goa.
In his letter, Congress President has served an ultimatum of 15 days to the Government to rectify the Black Spots & Accident Prone Zones in the State. The Congress Party has also demanded to regulate the Traffic in Goa with Effective Traffic Management.
It may be recalled that the Congress Party had staged a Protest at Directorate of Transport on Monday, 19th February 2024 to question the Government on its failure to control rising number of Fatal Accidents on the Killer Roads of Goa and its failure to introduce effective Traffic Management System in the State. Incidentally, the Director of Transport was found to be on leave despite five deaths occurring in the State in 48 hours.
“We have observed that the present Director of Transport is most Insensitive, Irresponsible and Arrogant. It is his failure which has resulted in innocent persons losing their lives on the killer roads of Goa and has no right to continue as the Director of Transport,” stated Amit Patkar in his letter.
“We have observed that the Department of Transport has not done any follow up with the Public Works Department to rectify the Black Spots and Accident Prone Zones in Goa. The Transport Department has absolutely no control over Traffic Signals in Goa,” Amit Patkar has mentioned in his letter.
The written communication further states that the Transport Department has miserably failed in regulating the “Rent-a-Cab and Rent-a-Bike” Operators in Goa which has resulted in involvement of Rented Cars & Bikes in various Fatal Accidents. The Transport Department has no clue about thousands of two wheelers used by E-Commerce Companies such as Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, Flipkart etc. which has resulted in loss of Revenue to the Government, claimed Amit Patkar.
The Transport Department has also failed to recover the Rural Welfare Cess amounting to 230.35 crores from 29 Companies in Goa. The Department has not conducted Safety Audits of the Kadamba Buses and the Balraths which are used for transportation of School Students, pointed the letter.
It is observed that almost 40 persons lost their lives in Fatal Accidents on the Killer Roads of Goa in last 40 days. In 2022-23, 335 persons lost their lives in Road Accidents in Goa. Despite this alarming rate of Accidents, the Transport Department has not taken any steps to improve the road condition by rectifying the Accident Prone Areas, increasing the Manpower for Enforcement as well as taking strict action against Violators of Motor Vehicle Act, stated Amit Patkar in his letter.
