New Delhi: India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav secured the silver medal in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games after a gripping contest with Nigeria’s Onome Didih that featured a series of record breaking lifts.
Gyaneshwari finished with a total lift of 199kg, comprising an 88kg snatch and a 111kg clean and jerk, earning India its fifth medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Indian lifter began confidently in the snatch, successfully lifting 82kg on her opening attempt before clearing 85kg and then 88kg to strengthen her position. However, Didih responded with an outstanding 93kg lift on her final attempt, setting a new Commonwealth record and taking the lead into the clean and jerk.
The battle intensified in the second phase as both athletes traded the lead with remarkable lifts. Gyaneshwari opened the clean and jerk with a successful 103kg effort, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. Didih answered immediately with lifts of 104kg and 105kg, reclaiming the lead while breaking both the Games and Commonwealth records.
Refusing to back down, Gyaneshwari produced a brilliant 107kg lift on her second attempt, briefly moving into the gold medal position and once again rewriting the record books. Despite her determined effort, the Nigerian lifter regained the advantage to secure the title, leaving the Indian with a well deserved silver medal.
Gyaneshwari’s outstanding performance added another medal to India’s growing weightlifting tally and highlighted the country’s continued dominance in the sport at the Commonwealth Games, with the closely fought final emerging as one of the competition’s most exciting events.
