New Delhi: India have suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya reportedly ruled out due to a fresh injury. Sources confirmed that Pandya has sustained a quadriceps injury, forcing him to miss the three-match series scheduled to begin on June 13.
The development comes just a day after Pandya was declared fit following assessments at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He had successfully completed fitness tests and was expected to join the Indian squad in Dharamsala on June 11.
Pandya’s latest setback is particularly disappointing as he was set to make his return to ODI cricket after more than a year. The Mumbai Indians star had recently battled injury issues during IPL 2026 and had worked hard to regain full fitness ahead of the international assignment.
The all-rounder had reportedly bowled his full quota of 10 overs during training sessions, raising hopes that he was ready for the demands of 50-over cricket. However, the fresh injury has once again put his availability in doubt and forced the selectors to consider a late replacement.
Pandya remains one of the most crucial members of India’s white-ball setup due to his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. His pace bowling, finishing skills and experience make him a key figure in India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Meanwhile, former captain Rohit Sharma, who was also undergoing fitness assessments for a hamstring niggle, has been cleared to participate in the series. However, senior batter Virat Kohli will miss the Afghanistan ODIs due to a hamstring injury.
The three-match series will be played in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Chennai on June 13, 17 and 20 respectively, with the Indian team management keen to build a settled combination for future ICC events.
