New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated India’s medal winners at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, praising their outstanding performances after another successful day for the Indian contingent. In a series of messages, the Prime Minister hailed the achievements of Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Sharmila Dhankar, and Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla, saying their success had brought pride to the nation.
Congratulating Sarvesh Kushare, who won silver in the men’s high jump, PM Modi praised his determination and consistency, describing his performance as an outstanding achievement and wishing him continued success in the future.
The Prime Minister also lauded weightlifter Valluri Ajaya Babu, who claimed silver in the men’s 79kg category while setting a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch. He said the weightlifter had added another memorable chapter to India’s growing success in the sport.
One of the biggest highlights came in para athletics, where Sharmila Dhankar clinched gold in the women’s Shot Put F57 event with a season best throw. PM Modi described the victory as a historic achievement, noting that it ended India’s two decade wait for a Commonwealth Games para athletics gold medal.
He also congratulated Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla, who secured bronze in the same event with a personal best effort. Her medal, later confirmed after a competitor’s disqualification, ensured a remarkable double podium finish for India in the women’s Shot Put F57 competition.
India enjoyed a productive fifth day of competition, adding four medals to its tally. Alongside Dhankar’s gold, medals came through Shilpa’s bronze, Sarvesh Kushare’s silver, and Valluri Ajaya Babu’s silver. Weightlifting also continued to be one of India’s strongest disciplines, with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver and Bindyarani Devi securing bronze earlier in the competition.
Indian athletes also progressed in boxing and swimming events, although competitors including Tejas Shirse and Sumit Kundu were eliminated from their respective events.
With these performances, India has reached 10 medals at the Commonwealth Games, comprising 2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze, continuing an impressive campaign across multiple disciplines.
