New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has launched a sharp attack on the BJP following remarks by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari that she claimed amounted to a threat to restrict her movement.
Banerjee shared a video of Adhikari’s remarks on social media, in which he appeared to say that she would not be allowed to step out of her home. The statement triggered a strong response from the TMC leader, who questioned the authority of any elected government to restrict the movement of a political opponent.
Banerjee accused the BJP of creating an atmosphere in which political dissent is discouraged and opponents are subjected to intimidation. She argued that the issue extended beyond her personally and concerned constitutional freedoms and the right to political participation.
The TMC chief questioned whether the remarks implied house arrest, intimidation or political persecution, and asked who could decide whether an individual was free to move around in a constitutional democracy.
Banerjee also dismissed suggestions that she could withdraw from active politics. During a Facebook Live session, she made it clear that she had no intention of taking political retirement and said her political battle against the BJP would continue.
She alleged that her government had faced restrictions on holding political meetings and accused the BJP of attempting to suppress opposition activities. Banerjee also claimed that people in West Bengal were increasingly recognising what she described as the BJP’s approach to governance.
The TMC chief further alleged that citizens were facing widespread intimidation under the new political administration.

The exchange has added another layer to the growing political confrontation between the TMC and BJP, with Mamata Banerjee positioning the dispute as a wider issue involving democratic freedoms and the rights of political opponents.
