PANJIM: Incessant rains since Monday evening inundated several parts of Goa with fire personnel attending to raining distress calls. Since Tuesday morning, the helpline in the control room of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services have been ringing continuously.
With a record 269 calls within 12 hours from 7am to 7pm, the fire fighters have been attending to the emergency calls.
In an unfortunate incident, an industrial unit employee died after a tree came crashing down on his moving car early Tuesday morning. The fore personnel had to cut the tree trunk to get the victim out of the car.
Out of the total calls, highest 36 calls were from Goa’s southernmost part – Canacona, the taluka which has always faced the wrath of heavy rains and floods in the last as well.
As of late evening, the fire personnel cleared 142 calls, attended to 18 calls while 108 are pending. Most of these calls are related to felling of trees and branches on the roads and houses.
